What is a water softener?

Simply put a water softener is “a devise or substance that softens hard water by removing certain minerals” – Google Dictionary

How does a water softener work?

That all depends on the type of water softener you are using…But to keep it simple, we’ll assume you are talking about that machine connected to the water that has a little hose running to the tank with the salt in it…

The way a water softener works is by ion exchange.  Water containing hardness minerals or other contaminants passes through a bed of resin which has been positively charged with sodium ions (salt).  The sodium ion exchanges for the hardness ion as the water passes through.  The hardness or other contaminants is thus removed from the water leaving behind only trace amounts of salt in your water.

Water softening is a process that professionals have been using for over 100 years now.  It is a safe and cost-effective way of removing many impurities from your water.  Contaminates such as inorganic calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and even radioactive materials.

A water softener also plays a role in trapping and removing sediment and suspended solids as it can also act as a filter to some degree.
